Heir of Fire by Sarah J. Maas [Book Discussion, SPOILERS]

*WARNING* INDEPTH DISCUSSION OF HEIR OF FIRE. SPOILERS FROM ALL BOOKS INCLUDING THIS ONE. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!

Now, shoo, and read the series! The rest of you, stay with me....

So where did we leave Celaena Sardothien at the end of Crown of Midnight? Well, for starters, she was pissed. And no, not the drunk tipsy kind (though we have seen that from her), the enraged kind! Nehemia had been killed, Chaol had betrayed her and she was on her way to Wendlyn to visit a rather regal relative (the delightful Fae Maeve) to find out about the Wyrdkeys in order to stop the King of Ardalan from taking over the worrrrrrrrrrrrrrrld! Remember now? Head boggled? Yes? Good, you're back on the Maas written rollercoaster!

Breathe. Embrace the feels.

Heir of Fire starts with Celaena still being enraged, but she is also a mess. She's spent all her money, abandoned her plans of killing people for the King (again) and is drinking quite a bit of wine! This book shows us as readers a new side to Celaena we didn't think we'd see, as after two books and a series of novellas, we thought we knew her right? Nope. We see Celaena as Aelin, the part of herself she has been trying to hide since she was a child, even before Arobynn started training her as an assassin. She is an emotional mess, so naturally when she finally does see the Fae, she is slightly hostile, in typical Celaena fashion.

And then we meet Rowan Whitethorn.

Another man?!

Oh yes, another man. Is he friend? Is he foe? Or is he another man to add to the already large love triangle containing Celaena, Sam (RIP :( ), Dorian and Chaol? Maas is the only author I have read who can create such a complex situation regarding love, with it not being tiring or bad to read. All the men introduced into Celaena's life, and in some aspects, the women she regards her friends such as Nehemia, reflect various parts of her character that show how flawed and imperfect she is. It's wonderful as with each new companion, we see a part of Celaena that we never knew existed. With Rowan, we also see this, as she remembers Aelin, remembers her legacy and unleashes her power in ways that completely push the boundaries of badass.

You want more?

Well, well, well, ever heard of Aedion? Oh yeah, just Celaena's long list childhood friend who is in love with her as well. And thanks to Chaol, learns that she's alive. Yep, this just became a love hexagon. Who is jealous of Celaena now? *raises hand* In all sincerity though, the addition of Aedion, especially as a general reporting to the King is pretty cool, as we are starting to see more of the Fae world, and I don't think this would be as strong without the additions of Aedion and Rowan.

Speaking of new additions, Maas has introduced a sidestory for all the witch covens. The King of Ardalan has 'hired' the numerous witch covens to be part of his army. The various chapters in Heir of Fire follow Manon, heir to the Blackbeak coven, as she tries to become Wing Leader. Despite being genuinely evil, with no heart and iron teeth, all whilst murdering humans for their tasty blood, I couldn't help but adore her.

Manon is AWESOME! She defies all the other witches by picking a Wyvern (dragon) Abraxos, who is considerably weaker than the other dragons, but seperating myself from Celaena and getting to pay a visit to Manon every once in a while was thrilling. At first I was quite confused this was happening, but then just learned to roll with it, it will definitely become evident in later books, as I can see a fight between Manon and Celaena brewing but I love them both. Manon, please join Celaena! I love you! Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh, fangirl!

So, back to Celaena's world. Whilst Chaol is in cahoots with Aedion and plotting the King's demise, what is Dorian doing? Well, he's controlling his magic...and shacking up with his healer, Sorscha. I'm sorry Team Dorian fans.

I have to say though, whilst being a mega Team Dorian fan in the first book, I've decided that I like him a lot more the way he is now. He is starting to act like a King, and with his power he has the ability to overthrow his father and him and Sorscha to take over the world, yes? Well, you know what's coming guys, you read the book (either that or you absolutely adore spoilers.) I can't even say it....

Dorian has the collar. Sorscha is dead. Why am I being left to wait? I need the next book now, shit shit shit. I was at a friends as I finished this book and I felt a lump in my throat....

How am I meant to last until Book Four? I need a help group. LOVED THIS BOOK!

Goodreads Rating: 5 out of 5 stars, oh my goddd!
